billy morrison - STAINED GLASS

Techniques

Copperfoiling is a technique which allows more flexibility in creating 3-dimensional work. However it is not weather-proof so is only suitable for indoor pieces. It is most effective for 3D vessels & decorations. Tiffany used this method for his lamps.

A thin self adhesive copper tape is burnished round the edges of prepared (cut & ground) glass pieces.  This tape accepts the solder and so the pieces can be joined together.

Lead is used to make larger stained glass panels for windows and doors, as well as outdoor, more sculptural, free-standing pieces.

The prepared pieces of glass are fixed in place with lengths of lead came, soldered at each join and then the panel is cemented on both sides to strengthen and weatherproof it.

Some panels are set in stainless steel frames as freestanding garden pieces.
